Carruthers' early correspondence records life at Miraj, India (as do a number of photographs and slides), and later correspondence with Rev. Alvin Schumaat regarding the International Christian Center for the Arts in Mexico reflects her views on the role of native art in missionary work. She planned an autobiography based on her experiences in India, and kept notes with this project in view, including her impressions of hospital patients, students, staff members, and Indian servants. The records also contains photographs, slides, lists of productions and cast members documenting her activities at the Stony Point Center in the 1960s. Also included is correspondence, history and leaflets about the founding of the International Christian Center for the Arts in Pasadena, Calif.

Jeanne Victor Hugo married Lyman Bruce Carruthers, a surgeon, and was posted with him by the Board of Foreign Missions, Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A., to Miraj Hospital Centre in western India where they remained until 1954. Dr. Carruthers worked as a surgeon, hospital administrator, and dean of the medical school. Jeanne Carruthers visited patients and organized social activities for students and hospital staff.
